Roanoke Connect to build Fiber to the Home across four new counties

On October 18th we announced our plans to begin building a Fiber to the Home (FTTH) across four new counties by the end of 2022.

Counties included in the new construction plan are:

  • Bertie County
  • Gates County
  • Town of Halifax
  • Northampton County

What is FTTH Technology?

FTTH Technology, commonly called fiber internet or just “fiber” is a broadband connection that can reach speeds up to 940 Mbps. The technology uses fiber-optic cable, which can send data as fast as about 70% the speed of light. In addition, fiber-optic cables are not as susceptible to severe weather conditions as other types of traditional cables, which helps minimize outages. It also resists electrical interference effectively. Also, as technology changes, equipment can be upgraded to provide even greater speeds in the future, using the existing fiber infrastructure.

What speeds can be expected with Roanoke Connect?

Roanoke Connect offers two speeds; 100Mbps download and 100Mbps upload and 1Gig download and 1Gig upload both of which is significantly higher than the official FCC broadband definition.

We currently serve over 4,000 homes with broadband service and that will grow to approximately over 7,000 by the end of the year. We are committed to closing the digital divide and positioning the community for success when it comes to reliable connectivity for work, school and beyond.
