“The majority or our employees are working from home for social distancing precautions but our line crews, engineering & staking crews and servicemen are out in the field, our cashiers are accepting payments via the drive through window and our member service representatives are handling all calls and questions,” said Curtis Wynn, President & CEO of Roanoke Electric Cooperative.
In addition, REC is opening internet hot spots in the five counties they serve including: Bertie, Hertford, Gates, Northampton and Halifax. So far, hot spots have been installed at The Roanoke Electric Cooperative main office in Aulander, The Roanoke Center in Rich Square, at cooperative substations near Murfreesboro, Jackson and Roanoke Rapids, Tar Heel Barbeque & Cool Springs Baptist Church in Eure and at Mt. Olive Church in Lewiston. As more locations are added they will be posted to the Roanoke Electric Cooperative website and on social media.
To log on to the hot spot, simply park at one of the locations and search for Wi-Fi connections. The hot spot is listed as Roanoke Connect Public Wi-Fi and there is no password. These will be available from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. every day.
“We know during this COVID-19 pandemic many residents in our communities have a need for access to the internet for making telemedicine appointments, applying for jobs online, doing school homework assignments and filing for unemployment benefits. We want students and other citizens across the region to be able to simply drive up to these locations, stay in their cars and enjoy the benefit of a quality high-speed internet connection,” added Wynn.
