Coming soon: NC and VA Forest Landowner Conference

Local forest landowners are invited to participate in The North Carolina and Virginia Forest Landowner Conference, which is scheduled to be offered virtually on Oct. 27-28.

The free event is being hosted by Roanoke Electric Co-op’s Sustainable Forestry & Land Retention Project, and The Black Family Land Trust, a North Carolina based nonprofit organization, considered one of the nation’s only conservative land trust dedicated to the preservation of underserved landowners.

The conference aims to educate landowners on strategies for technical assistance from state and federal agencies, forestry and agriculture taxation, and financial opportunities for forest landowners.

Curtis Wynn, the co-op’s president and CEO will serve as the keynote speaker.

“Forest and agriculture landowner education of available technical and financial resources is a focus of our project and this conference is a means to continue that focus during COVID-19,” said Alton Perry, Sustainable Forestry African-American Land Retention Project Manager.

The conference will feature three sessions, focusing on the following topics:

 

Session 1: Financial Assistance

Tuesday, Oct. 27, 6-7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn about state and federal services for forest landowners and farmers, in the form of cost-share programs and technical assistance.

 

Session 2: Taxation

Wednesday, Oct. 28, 10-11:30 a.m.

Landowners will receive information on North Carolina’s  forestry and agriculture property taxation program (Present Use Valuation .and learn how forest management plans impact eligibility for them.

 

Session 3: Economic Opportunities

Wednesday, October 28, 1-2:30 p.m.

Landowners will receive information about solar energy programs, recreational leasing, and other ways to derive income from their property.
