Roanoke Electric Co-op has awarded $3,110 in grants to support local fire departments, as part of its Operation RoundUp program.
At its quarterly meeting in July, the co-op’s Care Trust Board designated funding as follows:
- Como Vol Fire Dept.: Awarded $1,210 to purchase a hose bed cover for its first-due engine. This cover is an important safety feature that protects hoses, nozzles, and other equipment. It also helps keep items from flying off the vehicle while in transit.
- Garysburg Vol Fire Dept.: Awarded $1,900 to purchase pagers for firefighters to notify them of emergencies.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of having adequate funding for emergency services, especially in rural areas,” said Patrice Jordan, the co-op’s coordinator of community relations and engagement. “It’s a joy to know that these funds will be used to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of their firefighters and the public.”
Operation RoundUp is a charitable program supporting nonprofit organizations that serve to meet the health, safety, educational or recreational needs of the community. Funding is made possible when member-owners voluntarily “round up” their monthly electric bill to the next whole dollar.
“We’re so thankful for our membership,” Jordan noted. “They make it possible for us to invest in our communities.”
