Co-op food drive donates 2,200 pounds of food to local charities

Roanoke Electric Co-op employees collected 2,285 pounds of non-perishable food items to benefit community members in Gates and Halifax counties, during its third annual food drive contest.

The donation was given to Gates Emergency Ministries and Tillery Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, who picked up the goods in late November.

The friendly competition between departments has become a tradition at the co-op – each year demonstrating their growing enthusiasm to support those in need. This year, they collected more than 1,000 pounds more than they donated last year,

Who took home the victory?  The corporate services, accounting and finance department collected the most food this year weighing in at 862 pounds.

Marshall Cherry, interim president and CEO, expressed how rewarding the experience has been for the last three years.  “In the end, the folks in Gates and Halifax County are the winners of a truly wonderful gift from the whole team at Roanoke.”
