Prescribed fires lower the risk of wildfire by reducing the buildup of leaves and other fuels that can ignite and cause major damage. An added benefit, according to the N.C. Division of Forest Resources, is that prescribed burning stimulates regeneration of many plant species that provide food and cover for many wildlife species.
