A cybersecurity workshop and high-voltage safety demonstration will be among the many highlights of Roanoke Electric Cooperative’s upcoming annual meeting, billed as a “Member-Owner Celebration.”

Member-owners are encouraged to participate in these special presentations, which will take place Aug. 17 at Hertford County High School.

The workshop, “How to Recognize Cybersecurity Threats,” will provide practical tips member-owners can use to safeguard their internet-connected devices and personal data.

Led by Robin Harrell, the co-op’s director of information technology, the session will cover a wide range of topics ranging from how to scan devices for malware to how to set up a Wi-Fi network for guests.

The free, hour-long workshop is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. To participate, registration is requested. Seating is limited.

Another highlight of this year’s gathering will be an interactive high-voltage safety demonstration. Led by the co-op’s linemen, this presentation will showcase some of the precautions they take to ensure they remain safe in their line of work.

The linemen will also demonstrate what happens when contact is made with an energized line, simulating various scenarios as part of the presentation. Ever wonder what happens if an animal makes contact with a transformer? What would happen if a homeowner puts a ladder too close to a power line? The answers to these and other important safety questions will be offered at this hour-long demonstration, beginning at 9 a.m.

Both special events will take place prior to the co-op’s business meeting, during which member-owners can participate in the board of director’s election process.

To register for the cybersecurity workshop, RSVP to Patrice Jordan by email PJordan@roanokeelectric.com or by phone at (252) 209-2267 by Aug. 9. No registration is required to attend the high-voltage safety demonstration.
