2008 Youth Leadership Conference and Camp at White Lake held June 16-20

Deadline to turn in application is Friday, April 4, 5 p.m.

Every year, Roanoke Electric sponsors highly motivated students whose to attend a state-wide Youth Leadership Conference (also called a Camp) held at White Lake, N.C. The conference is typically held in June of each year and features educational programs by the Cooperative Council of North Carolina.

The camp is designed to provide an enjoyable learning experience for students to concentrate on:

1. The cooperative way of doing business in a free enterprise society.
2. Developing leadership skills and qualities in future cooperative and community leaders.
3. Building a better understanding and appreciation for cooperatives. 4. Recognizing outstanding North Carolina young adults possessing leadership qualities.


The Program, Qualifications, and How to Apply
Roanoke Electric Cooperative will pay for a student to stay at the beautiful N.C. FFA Center at White Lake, N.C. There are accommodations for more than 300 people on a five-acre waterfront tract. In addition to water sports, the facilities include an athletic field, two basketball courts, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, recreation hall, mini-golf, and shuffleboard.

The program lasts for one week and includes the organization of a T-shirt cooperative, election of a board of directors, the hiring of a manager and staff and the adoption of bylaws to govern the cooperative. Participants are also involved in small group sessions focusing on an area of leadership development. Speakers include prominent elected leaders and officials and representatives of marketing, purchasing, and service cooperatives.

Time is allotted for traditional camp activities and recreation and everyone is encouraged to mingle and have a good time!

As a special recognition of campers with unique leadership ability, four campers will be selected for an all expense-paid trip to the National Institute on Cooperative Education later in the year. All campers will be eligible to apply for a $1,000 Cooperative Leadership Camp College Scholarship.

Participants MUST:

  • be single.
  • be a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior ages 15 - 18.
  • be able to attend the ENTIRE camp.
  • be sponsored by a cooperative, 4-H, FFA or FHA/HERO.
  • be willing to utilize training following participation in the camp.
  • have leadership potential.
